Odoo for manufacturing, from bill of materials to finished stock

Plan production, run work orders and see what each product really costs, in the same system that runs your sales, purchasing and accounting.

Where production planning usually breaks

A sales order comes in and someone checks by hand whether there is enough raw material. Purchasing hears about the shortage when the line stops. The bill of materials lives in a spreadsheet that only one engineer updates.

At month-end, finance estimates the cost of each product, because labour, scrap and the real price of the components never reached the same place.

Odoo Manufacturing connects these steps. Bills of materials, component stock, purchase orders and work orders all read from one database, so a change to a bill of materials reaches purchasing and costing without anyone forwarding a file. Glassco Glass Factory, Medlink Egypt and Print Excel Digital Printing are among our published Odoo references in manufacturing.

How Odoo handles it

All of this is standard Odoo. Our part is setting it up around your products and your shop floor.

  • Bills of materials

Components, quantities and operations for each product, including sub-assemblies with their own bills of materials and variants that share one.

  • Manufacturing and work orders

Each manufacturing order splits into work orders by work centre. Operators see what to make next on a tablet at the station and record time and quantities as they go.

  • Planning from demand

Reordering rules and make-to-order routes create manufacturing and purchase orders from sales orders and minimum stock levels, so nobody has to check by hand.

  • Quality checks

Control points at receipt, during production or before delivery, and a quality alert when a check fails. The Quality app is part of Odoo Enterprise.

  • Maintenance

Equipment records per work centre, preventive maintenance scheduled ahead, and breakdowns logged against the machine.

  • Traceability

Lot and serial numbers from the raw material received to the finished product delivered, so a batch can be traced in either direction.

  • Product costing

Component costs from purchasing plus work centre time give a cost per manufacturing order. With Odoo Accounting, stock moves post their value to the books as goods move.

The Odoo apps that matter for a manufacturer

  • Manufacturing

Bills of materials, manufacturing orders, work orders and work centres.

  • Inventory

Raw materials, work in progress and finished goods by warehouse, location and lot.

  • Purchase

Purchase orders created from shortages, with vendor prices and lead times.

  • Sales

Quotations and sales orders that can trigger production when confirmed.

  • Quality

Control points, checks and alerts across receipt, production and delivery.

  • Maintenance

Equipment, preventive maintenance and breakdown requests.

  • PLM

Engineering change orders and versions of each bill of materials.

  • Accounting

Stock valuation, product costs and margins posted from the documents that caused them.

Quality and PLM are only in Odoo Enterprise. We’ll tell you which edition fits after discovery.

What Kites does on a manufacturing project

  • Implementation

We map your products, operations and work centres, then set up Manufacturing, Inventory and Purchase around them. See Odoo implementation.

  • Bills of materials and data

We help you clean and import products, bills of materials and opening stock from spreadsheets or your current system. See Odoo migration.

  • Customisation

Production reports, labels or approval steps that standard Odoo does not cover, written as custom modules. See Odoo customisation.

  • Integrations and apps

Connections to the tools you already use, and mobile apps or web portals for people outside the office.

  • Hosting, training and support

Hosting for your Odoo database, training for planners and operators, and support after go-live.

Questions from manufacturers

Does Odoo work for both make-to-stock and make-to-order?

Yes. Each product can follow its own route: built to keep stock above a minimum, built when a sales order is confirmed, or both.

Can operators use Odoo on the shop floor?

Yes. Work orders can run on a tablet at each work centre, where operators start and stop jobs and record quantities and scrap.

Do we need Odoo Enterprise?

Bills of materials, manufacturing orders and work orders are in both editions. Quality, PLM and the master production schedule are Enterprise apps. We recommend one after discovery, when we know which of these you need.

Can we move our bills of materials from Excel?

Yes. Odoo imports products, components and bills of materials from spreadsheets. We help you clean the file first, because a mistake in a bill of materials becomes a mistake in purchasing and costing.

How long does a manufacturing implementation take?

Longer than a sales-and-stock setup, because bills of materials, operations and costing all have to be right before go-live. The plan from the fit-gap stage gives you dates.
