Most migration problems are data problems
When a migration goes wrong, the data is usually the cause. We see the same customer entered three times, products with no units of measure, stock figures nobody has counted in a year and supplier balances that do not match the bank. Copy that into Odoo as it is and you carry the same problems into the new system.
So every migration we run starts with the data. We find the duplicates and gaps, agree with you what to fix, merge or leave behind, and only then build the import. Your team checks the result in a test database before anything goes live.
Where we migrate from
From spreadsheets
Odoo can import data from spreadsheet files. We clean and structure your sheets first so products, customers and balances come in correctly the first time.
From another ERP or accounting system
We export the data from your current system, map each field to its place in Odoo and test the result. [NEEDS CLIENT INPUT: systems Kites has migrated from before, if you want to name them]
From an older Odoo version
Upgrading between major Odoo versions changes the database structure. Standard data is converted, and every custom module is checked and updated for the new version.
From Community to Enterprise
A Community database can be moved to Enterprise to get the extra apps. We check your custom modules and any third-party apps for compatibility first.
How a migration runs
Nothing goes live until a full test migration has been checked by the people who use the data.
Review the data
We look at what you have, where it lives and what state it is in.
What you receiveA list of what moves, what needs cleaning and what stays behind.Clean and map
Duplicates are merged, gaps filled and each field matched to its place in Odoo.
What you receiveCleaned data and an agreed field map.Test migration
We run the full migration into a test database, exactly as we will on the day.
What you receiveA test database with your real data in it.Check and correct
Your team checks balances, stock and open documents against the old system. We fix what they find and run it again.
What you receiveSign-off from your team on the figures.Final migration
On an agreed date we freeze the old system, run the final migration and switch over.
What you receiveYour live data in Odoo, matching the old system.
Opening balances or full history
You do not have to bring every old record across. We agree with you what you need to see in Odoo and what can stay in an archive.
Opening balances
Start fresh from a cut-over date.
- Customer, supplier and account balances on the cut-over date
- Stock quantities and open documents
- Less data to clean, so a faster migration
- The old system or an export kept for reference
Full history
Past transactions available in Odoo.
- Past orders, invoices and payments searchable in Odoo
- Reports that compare this year with earlier years
- More cleaning and testing before go-live
A common middle ground is opening balances plus recent history. We help you decide during the data review.
Questions about Odoo migration
Can you migrate us from spreadsheets?
Yes. Data migration is part of every implementation, whether the data sits in spreadsheets, another system or an older Odoo version.
Will our custom modules work on the new Odoo version?
Not until someone checks them. We review each custom module, update it for the new version and test it with your data. How much work that takes depends on how the modules were written.
Does Odoo upgrade the database for us?
With an Enterprise subscription, version upgrades are included and Odoo converts the standard data. Custom modules and the testing still need a partner. On Community, the partner runs the whole upgrade.
Will we have to stop working during the switch?
Only for the final migration, which we schedule with you, for example over a weekend or at a quiet point in the month. The test migrations happen while you keep working.
How long does a migration take?
It depends on how much data there is, how clean it is and how many custom modules are involved. After the data review we give you a plan with dates.
Moving to Odoo or to a newer version?
Tell us what you run today and roughly how much data you have. We’ll start with a free call and a look at your data.
